GCE Consultant Referral Service
Q: What is the GCE Consultant Referral Service?
The Consultant Referral Service is offered by the GCE to hospital members seeking qualified consultants to lead customized board retreats, educational sessions at board meetings and / or provide general consulting in the area of health care governance
The GCE Consultant Referral Service presents options available to hospitals and organizations to consider. Which consultant will meet your needs is to be determined by the hospital / organization.
Q: Why was the consultant referral service created?
The Ontario Hospital Association has frequently received requests from our member hospitals seeking qualified consultants. In response to this need, the Governance Centre of Excellence established a web-based Consultant Referral Service. This service will assist hospitals and other health care organizations in selecting a consultant that will serve their needs.
Q: How does this service work for hospitals?
Hospitals have a web-based resource to search and identify a consultant that will fit the needs of the hospital for a particular consulting service. The hospital will contact the consultant directly to negotiate an agreement.
Hospitals will need to identify which consultant will best match the needs of the organization. The GCE can help refer you to options available to you. The correct fit between your organization needs and the consultant is your responsibility.
Q: How does a consultant register with this site?
Contact Lina Pallotta, Coordinator, Governance Centre of Excellence at lpallotta@oha.com for additional information.
Q: How much does the Consultant Referral Service cost?
There is no cost to view, use or search the site. The cost of consultant work will depend on the consultant chosen and the service required.
Q: Will there be a charge to use this service to hospital members?
No. The service is free to access on the GCE website at www.gce-oha.com/consultants.
Q: How often is the information updated?
The information will be updated periodically based on information received from the consultants or additional services added.
Q: What special features will the website have?
A member will be able to search consultant profiles in a variety of ways. By region, organization name and by area of expertise. Each consultant profile lists the company information, logo and link to the organization’s own website.

Q: How does the new curriculum work?
The principles for the design of the new program and the courses within are as follows:
Trustees take what they need at the right time; that is, trustees take an appropriate course to meet their specific needs at their stage of development. As, and if, they progress, they take the courses they feel they need in order to meet the new challenges facing them, e.g. chairing a committee, leading the board, etc.
The programs are designed so that there are courses or conferences to meet the most common needs of trustees over their life-cycle.
A certificate will be granted to those completing each course successfully. That certificate would signify that the person is prepared to serve in the capacity covered by the course.
Certificates for individual courses will replace the previous two-level credential programs.
Q: Based on the old curriculum, is my Level I and Level II credential valid?
Although the curriculum has been revised, each credential continues to be valid. The credentials acknowledge the person’s commitment to leadership and development as a health care trustee.
Since many people have and are maintaining a credential, and others are working toward them, a transitional approach has been implemented.
Until January 2008, any new governance course will be accepted as a qualifying credit towards maintaining or completing a credential.
For those in the process of achieving Level I, which requires the completion of two courses, the new Advanced Certificate in Board Governance course will be equivalent to the Effective Health Care Governance as the core course for Level I.
Those in the process of achieving Level II, i.e. have their Level I designation, will be required to take an additional three courses from the new curriculum.
Q: Are the courses compulsory?
Courses are not compulsory. However, some hospitals have strongly encouraged their trustees to complete OHA’s governance courses. Other hospitals, such as Leamington District Memorial Hospital have mandated that new trustees now complete the OHA’s Essentials Certificate in Health Care Governance course within the first year of serving on the Board.
